                        India is an agriculturally rich country, and farming is the main foundation of its economy. Approximately 60 per cent of the population is directly dependent on agriculture and related occupations. Among these, milk production and the dairy business are supportive and important supplementary activities to farming. At present, India is the largest milk-producing country in the world, contributing about 24 per cent of the global milk production. Nearly 240 million tons of milk are produced, with major contributions from the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.

          The dairy industry is rapidly developing in rural areas of India. Cows and buffalo are its main sources. In Maharashtra, the number of cows and buffaloes is relatively high. However, farmers here face several challenges, such as small landholdings, financial difficulties, dependence on rainfall, and low crop productivity. In such situations, dairy farming has become a sustainable source of income for farmers.

          Due to industrialisation, urbanisation, and changing lifestyles, demand for milk and milk products has risen. Through milk cooperative societies, milk producers, and milk collection and distribution center's, farmers gain additional benefits from producing milk, curd, butter, ghee, paneer, and shrikhand. Milk is a nutritious food and is essential for everyone. Since it contains proteins and other necessary nutrients, it is very important for health.

          Today, dairy farming is not just a supplementary occupation but has become a professional industry that provides a stable income. Large quantities of milk are produced from cows and buffaloes, and the demand for it continues to grow. Therefore, the importance of dairy farming is increasing day by day in both rural and urban areas.
