Maize is a highly versatile and emerging crop, capable of adapting to a wide range of agro-climatic conditions. It is globally recognized as the ‘Queen of Cereals’ because it possesses the highest genetic yield potential among all cereal grains. India currently ranks fourth in maize cultivation, with production reaching approximately 43.41 million tones in the 2024-25 season. It stands as the country’s third most important food crop, following rice and wheat.
In the Kinwat taluka of Maharashtra's Nanded district, maize production—particularly during the Rabi season—is steadily increasing. Many farmers are now venturing into small-scale hybrid seed production. In the Shivni and Islapur circles alone, nearly 50 acres are dedicated to this purpose. One such farmer, Mr. Madhav Wanole , has been producing hybrid maize seeds on three acres of his land for the past two years. He notes that seed production is a highly efficient way to increase agricultural income, as it requires less time and effort than traditional crops. His success with hybrid seeds has brought him significant professional satisfaction.
